Stripped of our Crown....

by Kyle Michaelis
We was robbed!!! Nebraska's poor performing economy - which this summer earned us the undisputed title of 2004's Stagnation National Champion - ended up being just mediocre enough to squeak by Michigan in the Bureau of Economic Analysis' newly revised statistics.

That's right...we now ranked 49th, not 50th, in growth of our Gross State Product. Hooray us!

Of course, scarily enough, this was still in a year that many considered the best ever for our ag production. With Nebraska's largely ag-based economy this demonstrates either a troubling disconnect between real producers and the production of wealth OR it suggests things are even bleaker than they seem. This begs the question: if our agricultural fortunes took a turn for the worse, just how bad of shape might Nebraska's economy be in?

It's a long way off, but one's got to assume that any preseason polling for 2005 would put Nebraska's chances pretty high for recapturing its claim to ultimate economic infamy.

There's a rallying cry for all our Republican office-holders come election time - "Never again, Michigan! Never again!"

*11/02 Update- On the economic forecasting front, I don't mean to be so pessimistic. Who knows?
